One weight loss myth is that skipping meals is an acceptable form of weight loss. Since the body does not take anything in, then calories are kept out of the system. Many people actually think that skipping meals help them lose weight, that quite a number of dieters do not take breakfast. In reality, skipping meals only slows down the body's metabolism, thus preventing the body from burning calories. Moreover, skipping meals just temporarily mask the hunger pangs. Eventually, the hunger pangs will catch up, and the person will be prone to overeating. It is far from advisable to skip meals; the better way to lose weight is to eat at least three meals a day.

Another myth about weight loss is that one should not eat snacks or desserts. Depriving one of small pleasures only backfires, because if a person can't take the deprivation any longer, then he or she binges out on the snacks. Snacks and desserts prevent a dieter from becoming grumpy. Allowing one to indulge once in a while brings the fun factor in healthy eating. It doesn't really matter if a person takes snacks throughout the day, as long as his or her food is still within the recommended caloric intake.

Most people also believe that eating after 8 pm leads to weight gain. People have always ignored their hunger at night, because they believe that if they eat, they will get those extra pounds. Actually, it does not matter if a person eats late at night. The physical activity a person does throughout the day pretty much determines if a person will gain weight or not. As long as the person's physical activity is enough to burn the calories he or she consumed throughout the day, then there really should be no worries about eating late at night. Also, the body is able to digest food in an hour and a half. So if a person snacks late at night, the best thing to do is wait a while before going to bed. As long as the body is given enough time to digest the food, then eating late at night is no big deal.

Another weight loss myth is that people should entirely eliminate carbohydrates and starches from their diet if they want to lose weight. Many people swear by this myth that they refuse to eat rice, pasta or bread. Actually, the body needs carbohydrates, because it fuels the body and provides energy. Eating too little carbohydrates in one day (less than 130 grams) is a recipe for disaster, because ketones build up in the blood. In effect, an excess of uric acid is produced, which can lead to kidney stones or gout. Eating whole grains is a must for people who wish to follow a healthier eating plan.

Before sticking to a rule in dieting and eating, one must first check if the information is actually true. After all, if people continue to follow myths, they're doing more harm than good to their bodies.
